About This Video

In this Labor Day haul, I’m running through a handful of pickups from the last couple weeks and talking about why each one matters in a collection—especially if you’re into jazz pressings and good reissues. I start with four Miles Davis Prestige-era titles tied to two 1956 sessions. Three of them are the Analog Productions/Acoustic Sounds cuts pressed at QRP and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original mono master tapes, and the fourth (“Workin’”) is the OJC Revival from Craft—also Kevin Gray, also original mono tapes. I’ve only spun “Cookin’” so far, but it sounds absolutely amazing, and I’m really happy knowing the rest are still available on Acoustic Sounds. From there I jump into a Beatles piece of history: “Get Back” (the Glyn Johns mix). It’s rough around the edges in the best way—more raw, less overdubbed than the Phil Spector “Let It Be,” and you get more of the band chatter between tracks. I also hit two Raleigh stops: Hunky Dory (killer vibe, knowledgeable staff, and they’ll actually let you audition used records) and Father and Son Vintage Vinyl, where I scored an original Lee Morgan “The Gigolo.” Between finding fair prices, checking condition, and cleaning with my ultrasonic, this one was a pretty perfect weekend of digging.
