About This Video

This video is me turning a super basic 6DOF servo arm kit into my own little lab assistant, Buddy (aka Bud-E). The kit itself is honestly just a pile of servo brackets and screws—I grabbed it online for around $60—and building it felt like LEGO. But I didn’t want a “remote-controlled claw.” I wanted something smarter, with a bit of personality, like Tony Stark’s Dum-E: always around to help, and just enough attitude to feel alive. So I start modding. I add an ultrasonic sensor so the arm can detect when I’m handing it an object and help hold things (because sometimes you just need an extra hand). Then I make it independent—no laptop tether—by giving it its own “brain” using the D-Robotics RDK X5 board. That board is basically a full computer you can plug into with HDMI, mouse, and keyboard, and it’s built to run AI (I talk about using it for voice control, sensors, and eventually training a smarter personality). The big takeaway: you don’t need a million-dollar lab to build real robotics—mechatronics is the closest thing to real-life Iron Man, and you can do it from home if you keep iterating and actually build.
