About This Video

Welcome back to 2024—hangboard session #7 of my comeback, and yeah… it was surprisingly weak. I spent like 8 minutes just trying to get my fingers to work because my skin felt super slippery on the smooth wooden holds of the Finger Schinder portable board. Even my usual trick (a bit of water on the fingertips with chalk/wood) didn’t save it. If I had forced another two-handed session with added weight, it would’ve been a straight-up plateau session. So I finally changed strategy: I moved from two-handed weighted pulls (around a ~12mm edge) to assisted one-armers on the bigger edge (roughly ~24mm). The goal is simple: I bulked up from higher-rep work (up to ~5 reps), and now I’m trying to “strengthen up the mass gains” with very low reps—mostly 1 rep, sometimes testing 2. I used my old pulley setup with assisting weight (kettlebells and small plates), and it immediately showed me the imbalance: right hand looked solid, left hand was shockingly weak that day. Big takeaway: for real climbing—especially outdoors—smaller edges matter. I’d rather use more assistance and train a smaller edge than chase low assistance on a big hold. Also, being heavier (I was 72 kg training weight) is just not ideal for climbing—weight kills you in the end, trust me.
