Let's geek out on Adam Ondra's flash of the classic boulder Jade 8B+ / V14 in RMNP, which was first ascented in 2007 by none other than Daniel Woods. The wizard is not only a reach monster, but also on top of the finger strength / body weight game, and this proves both! About This Video

In this reaction episode I keep the “Adam Ondra strongest moments” series going, but this time I’m geeking out on something people often underestimate: Adam’s finger strength divided by body weight. We’re looking at his flash of Jade (8B+ / V14) in RMNP—an absolute king line, super crimpy, overhanging, and with a nasty low-percentage slot move that’s all about precision. I start with Daniel Woods’ first ascent from 2007 (glorious potato quality), because he explains just how bad those holes really are and you can see the tiny “hitbox” you have to nail. Then I compare ascents: Daniel’s solution gets more dynamic because even with his crazy ape index he’s still fighting that move, and Alex Puccio’s first female ascent shows how much more body tension and stretch is required when you’re shorter—especially the left leg and the high foothold/drop-knee position. And then Adam shows up, the long long long stick figure, and just… makes the crux basically static. The big takeaway is simple coaching-wise: flashing gets way more likely when you can reduce snap and risk—reach helps, but only if you also have the finger strength to actually own the holds. Adam has that combo, plus the dexterity and strategy (even how he chooses which fingers to use) that makes it look unfair.
