About This Video

In this video I’m showing what I’d call the lazy man’s / busy man’s approach to assisted one-armer finger strength training. Same general target as my more “super scientific” one-arm hangboard experiments from the past—edge strength with a big one-arm emphasis—but without the stopwatch lifestyle, pulley systems, kettlebells, harnesses, or any of that Peacemaker 2000 nonsense. If you’ve got very little time (think 30 minutes) and only a portable hangboard on a single rope, you’re already set. The whole trick is simple: I use spacers—one in the middle and two on the sides—and I regulate assistance by where I place my pulling hand. The closer my pulling hand gets to the center, the more load it takes, and the less the assisting hand does. You can’t track exact numbers because you never truly know how much weight is on each hand, but you can track progress by feel and by position: tiny bit by bit moving toward the center (like getting the pinky onto the center spacer). I kept it symmetrical (right hand, rest, left hand, rest), with roughly 1 minute rest on average (sometimes 50 seconds, sometimes up to 2 minutes). The session was about half an hour including warm-up and cool-down, and I finished with some easy pull-ups. I weighed in at 71.1 kg and still felt strong—back on the road to gains, nation.
