About This Video

In this video I’m tackling one of the most annoying hot glue problems: getting it to actually stick to slippery materials like plastic. Hot glue isn’t really “sticky” in the way people think—it mostly grabs onto texture—so I walk through four strategies I use to get a much stronger bond. The first is sanding the plastic to rough it up so the glue has something to grip. The second is using high temperature so the glue gets runnier, spreads out, seeps into tiny cracks, and gives you more working time (just be careful—high heat can damage some materials). Then I show two mechanical-style hacks that make hot glue way more reliable. The “glue hook” trick uses the fact that hot glue is 3D: I build it up around an object and over the top to lock it in place (not pretty, but strong). And my favorite secret move for thin plastic sheets is punching holes around the edge so the glue pushes through and forms little “rivets.” I also show how I use that hole trick to make clear DIY windows for cardboard builds. And don’t skip the must-do hack: clean your surfaces, because dust/oil will ruin your bond every time.
