In this video I do something that, honestly, goes against how I’ve built tanks for years: I strip this aquarium right back, remove everything, and rebuild it with basically no “proper” nutrient substrate. It’s just sand and gravel (inert), and I rely on dosing the water column instead. I started experimenting with this recently and the plant growth has been amazing with just a little fertilisation each week—so I wanted to push it further and make a really simple, contemporary scape that still feels wild and natural. I also mess about with a custom background idea—trying to fade blue into white with spray paint. Spoiler: the blue was a failure (wrong shade, looked tacky), but that’s the whole point of testing stuff. I scrape it off and end up with a clean white background that actually looks sleek, then I chase a “moody sunlight” vibe using a single spotlight. The scape itself is thin, flat, and intentional: river-style cobbles, one delicate twiggy bit of wood, and then I let the plants do the heavy lifting—dwarf sag, finer stems like Myriophyllum ‘Matogrossense’, Rotala bits, and a touch of pearl weed (with a trimming warning). I finish by getting the water clearing, testing a cheap stainless skimmer, and setting the tank up to look even better by tomorrow.
