In this video I show you exactly how I’d set up a first betta fish tank that looks wild and natural, but stays dead simple to run. I start with a 45L / 45cm tank (honestly a perfect size for a betta) and use the “greening” style: inert quartz sand for a clean riverbed look, a simple pebble border, and two punchy bits of wood to create height and loads of plant attachment points. The whole idea is that you can walk into a shop, grab a few basics, and replicate it at home without overthinking it. Because sand has no nutrients at the start, I keep the planting super easy by using epiphytes only—Java fern, Bolbitis, Anubias and Bucephalandra—so everything feeds from the water column. I glue the wood to rocks with superglue gel (it hardens into an inert plastic), hide the glue points with small plants, and run a small, gentle filter so the betta isn’t getting blasted around. I also cover the big beginner mistake: don’t rush the fish in. I’m using cycled media and mature plants, but if it’s your first tank, let it run 1–2 weeks, test your water, and do a 50% change if ammonia or nitrite shows up. Dose an all-in-one fert weekly and just enjoy it—no awards needed.
