In this video I’m basically doing a little studio tank tour, and it’s one of those ones where you realise how much you can learn just by standing there with a coffee and actually watching. The shrimp tanks have been running a couple of months now and I’m buzzing because every single colony has babies. I talk through why I design those open sand foregrounds (so food sits up front and you can actually see what’s going on), plus I spotted planaria in one tank and treated all of them—because in a shrimp-only setup, those flatworms can be nasty for shrimplets. Then we get onto a proper weird-but-amazing one: mushrooms literally growing out of a piece of wood that’s been in the studio for years. The tank itself has been ridiculously hands-off apart from adding a surface skimmer to clear a thick layer of surface scum, and I’m loving that “set it up, enjoy it, let it evolve” vibe. Finally, the big one: the discus are back at the studio, and it’s night and day. At home they got stressed (kids, shadows, banging, peninsula tank with too many exposed sides), but here they’re calm, out front, and I’ve got my excitement back instead of that nervous feeling. I also share some discus basics—don’t make them your first fish, feed little and often, and be ready to spot issues fast (deworming made a massive difference for me).
