In my last video I built a super simple betta tank in this exact 45cm setup, but this time I’m pushing it a step further—more detail, more plants, a bit more budget… cha-ching. I still keep it achievable though. I show you how I layer the substrate properly (a little gravel mixed with a *hint* of aquatic compost, then capped) so you get better root growth without turning the bottom into a sludgy mess. I used to think “more is more” with nutrient substrate—trust me, it can cause problems. What’s worked best for me is a little nutrition down low, then dosing the water column. For the scape, I go with a classic triangular composition using Seiryu stone and manzanita wood—honestly that combo is a bit of a cheat code. I glue the wood down (because it’ll float), plant epiphytes like Anubias petite, then add established stems for that “finished” look straight away. I also show you what happens when fresh wood leeches tannins and fungus—don’t panic, just water change and get filtration running. Finally, I fit a decent hang-on-back filter and do a simple flow hack so it doesn’t batter the stems, add floating plants for my “Papa Smurf” betta’s resting spots, and talk through why I’d rather keep a betta solo (with shrimp/snails optional).
