About This Video

In this talkie-talk video, Jay and I dig into a Patreon question we hear all the time: does painting a lot of models make you a better painter? My cheeky answer is “no”… but also yes, a little. Repetition absolutely helps—if you’re basecoating 30 Space Marines or slapchopping nonstop, you’ll get better at the mechanical parts: thinning paint, unloading a brush, controlling pressure, and just generally getting paint onto models faster and cleaner. Where the “just paint more” idea falls apart is when you’re doing the same thing the same way forever. You can get really good at your six songs, but it doesn’t make you a musician—same deal here. If you want real improvement, you’ve got to change what you practice: try new techniques, new color schemes you don’t even own the paints for, and learn how pigments behave differently. Push into stuff that’s uncomfortable (color theory choices, oil paints, airbrushing, NMM, new workflows), because that’s where the brain connections actually happen. We also talk about plateaus, bad habits you can accidentally “practice in,” and the balance between challenging yourself and not stun-locking into perfectionism. Painting more can be healthy—especially if perfectionism is stopping you—but improvement comes from thoughtful, intentional practice, not just raw output.
