About This Video

In this one I’m talking White Dwarf magazine—yeah, it still comes out every month—and why it feels kind of… obsolete. Chris and I have been around this hobby a long time (and we’ve run the shop for 11 years), so we’ve watched White Dwarf go through a bunch of “revivals,” including the infamous weekly White Dwarf era. That weekly experiment was a brutal idea: hyperfocused, stacks of unsold issues, and the pitch was basically “it’s the price of a pot of paint, how can anyone say no?” Well… if I don’t want it, I don’t want it. The core point is simple: the magazine didn’t necessarily get worse, but the world changed. White Dwarf used to be the first place you’d see new releases, hobby how-tos, terrain builds, campaign coverage, and the big global events. Now Warhammer Community and the constant online drip (plus leaks) make the “news” part irrelevant, and YouTube/tutorial content replaces a lot of the hobby education. So is it toast? Not completely—but it needs to evolve. My fix is straightforward: put an exclusive mini (or collectible series) in every issue, like other wargaming magazines do, and make it a real reason to collect all 12. Tie it in with the physical hobby side and even pair it better with Warhammer+—because right now, at $14 and with most stores struggling to sell even eight, the value-add just isn’t there anymore.
