About This Video

Games Workshop dropped the “Million Model Challenge,” and in this (yes) kind of garbage-time ramble video I talk through why I think it’s actually a really solid idea—especially this time of year. January/February is when a ton of people are sitting on holiday backlog, and up here in Canada winter basically forces a hobby boom anyway. So GW putting a big, global goal out there is basically a “new year, new army” challenge with a shiny wrapper, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to smash the million without breaking a sweat. But the real point isn’t whether the number is perfect (they could fudge it for all I care). The point is getting people to set a goal, show up, and actually finish models. I’ve found over 30 years in the hobby that even if you don’t hit the target, you’ll paint way more than you would have without a deadline hanging over you. And that’s the secret sauce: this hobby is type-two fun—sometimes it’s work, sometimes it’s a slog (hello, 10th cavalry horse), but the payoff of finishing is a deeper, real sense of accomplishment. If you’re near a Warhammer store, go pledge something—25 models, whatever—because once you commit, it gets in your head and you start building the habit.
