About This Video

What’s going on, hobby people? In this one I’m continuing my run through the Vallejo True Metal Metallic line, and today it’s the Amethyst Purple recipe. I’m going in a bit raw here—I haven’t actually put this full recipe on a finished model yet—so you’re watching me work it out in real time on one of my favorite Magkin guys from the Dark Water box (Mr. Twoax). The starting point is dead simple: basecoat with Amethyst Purple, then “slam” the Amethyst Purple shade on and let it dry so it shrinks down into the recesses and gives you that subtle depth. From there, I show how I build the highlights with a super straightforward mix: start with roughly a 50/50 of the base Amethyst and the Light color, then push up into straight Light. For the extreme pops, I use Vallejo Metal Color Chrome as my “white” (very sparingly on sharp edges), and I keep a bit of black around to punch in the deepest shadows between plates. Biggest takeaway: these metallics thin really easily, hand brush beautifully, and because the base + highlight are already matched, you’re not guessing your way to a good TMM look—just take your time, move the model around, and let the reflections tell you where to place the light.
