This month’s On the Painting Table is our December 2025 hobby check-in, and yeah… it’s that time of year where your calendar gets “scheduled for you” and the hobby takes a bit of a nose dive. The store’s busy, life’s busy, but winter in Canada is when people get stuck inside and the paint starts flowing again—so we’re already looking at January as the real kick-off for challenges and getting momentum back. On my side, I wrapped up my Votann Combat Patrol with the Yârl and the Pioneer bikers (aka a ton of trench coats, because of course everyone’s wearing a trench coat). I also break down the exact paint steps people asked about: my black recipe built off black primer + Anthracite Grey (one of my all-time favorites) with chunky highlights in SLA Blue and tiny situational pops with Spectrum Blue. For the yellow I followed the “John Ho Yellow” method—more steps than it needs to be, but it works: French Brown → Light Brown → glaze Volcanic Yellow → spot with Pale Yellow. Jay’s been grinding through a big horde project (Cursed City-style bad guys) using zenithal airbrushing, AK Quick Gen paints (Plague Yellow, leathers, washes), and leaning hard into the BSL Aged Metal system. We also talk batch painting sanity, upcoming projects (Void Dragon C’tan for a 500 Worlds narrative mega battle, and a return to War Machine builds), and the only hobby advice that actually matters: take small, reachable bites so you don’t go nuts.
