About This Video

In this video I’m continuing work on my Darkwater Pestagors, and this time it’s all about horns, teeth, and that ivory/bone look. I start from a simple base (think deck tan/warm gray with a bit of wash already on there), then I build the horn color up using a mix of AK Saddle Brown and Warm Gray. The big takeaway is I’m not trying to slam on a super bright highlight right away—I’m mapping the shapes, keeping the shadows, and letting the horn stay defined so it doesn’t turn into one flat, loud color. From there I deepen the recesses with a super thin “watery brown” pin wash using Grim Brown (I like regular paint for this because I can control the opacity). Then I start stepping up toward an ivory tone—Screaming Skull style—using tiny strokes, light pressure, and a brush that’s not crazy loaded. If something gets too bright, I knock it back down (dark colors cover light colors easily), and I’m constantly unloading on a damp paper towel to keep things subtle. It’s a bit tedious, no question, but if you want it to look good you’ve gotta slow down—paint a little every day and it adds up.
