About This Video

In this video I’m knee-deep in my Leagues of Votann, and these little dudes have more edges than anything that’s ever been edged before. So it felt like the perfect time for a quick fireside chat on how I approach edge highlighting—especially after an airbrushed basecoat, when everything looks super flat and the shapes don’t really read until you start defining them. My process here is prime black, airbrush an anthracite grey base (one of my all-time favorites), then go in with a first edge highlight using a softer blue-grey (SLA Blue) to bring all the detail back. The big takeaway: my first edge highlight is generous. I’m trying to outline and define almost every edge to make the model pop, but I’m keeping the paint thin on a wet palette so the lines stay controlled. Then the “extra effort that doesn’t actually take very much time” is the second highlight: a really bright, cold color (think Spectral Blue / Space Wolves Grey vibes), applied minimally only on the extreme points and top areas. I’ll even add tiny dots and nicks for wear and tear—like you see on good box art—because it sells the model on the tabletop where lighting is usually pretty dark. Focus your detail on the upper third, don’t redo every edge, and don’t waste time highlighting stuff nobody’s looking at anyway.
