About This Video

What’s going on, hobby friends—Jay here from Lords of War. This video is basically me admitting what a lot of us are quietly dealing with: getting older in the Warhammer hobby and suddenly realizing we can’t see the tiny details like we used to. Around 37, I hit that wall hard with 28mm models—my eyes just couldn’t resolve the detail anymore, even though my distance vision is fine. Between decades of screen time, years of painting, kids, and sleep deprivation, the eye strain finally caught up, and “brute forcing it” stopped working. So I walk through the painting aids I’ve picked up over the last couple years—mostly different magnifying glasses options (simple readers all the way up to stronger hobby lenses) and why I landed on what I use most. The big takeaway though is this: don’t feel bad investing in visibility. For me, the two game changers are eyewear and lighting. If you’re spending hundreds on miniatures, save a month and spend a couple hundred on proper lights—go for high lumens (1000–1500+) and around 5000K so your colors don’t skew blue or red. It’s not “cheating,” it’s just staying in the hobby longer.
