About This Video

Welcome back to Lords of War Hobby Channel—where we don’t know what we’re doing and we like to do that on camera… but yeah, all jokes aside, we’ve been in this hobby for 30 years and we own a hobby store. In this video I’m testing the Army Painter chipping sponges the way they’re actually intended: quick, controllable sponge chipping on a Space Marine. I show how I load the sponge, why I do a few taps before hitting the model, and how I aim for edges and high-wear areas instead of just mashing the whole surface. The big takeaway is control and color choice. I’m using warm dark browns (Red Skin Shadow and AK Saddle Brown) because they read as believable wear against cooler armor tones, and I’m careful to “dab,” not pull—unless I want streaks. Then I take it to the next level by grabbing a trusty size 0 brush and highlighting the chips with my armor highlight mix (Ducati Blue + Laser Yellow). That little step is what stops chips from looking like random brown clouds and actually sells depth. Overall, these sponges do what they advertise, and for convenience and accessibility at around $10-ish for a few tools, it’s an easy product to like.
