In this video I’m breaking down LG’s brand-new announcement for the Ultragear 39GX950B, a 39-inch 5K2K tandem OLED ultrawide that they’re showing at CES. As someone who’s owned the LG 45GX950A/“GX9” 45-inch, I’m ridiculously hyped—like, I’m genuinely debating whether this replaces my 45 or if I just grab one to test and compare. The big story is the size shift plus the sharpness jump: going 39 inches at 5120x2160 pushes pixel density up to about 142 PPI, which is actually higher than a 32-inch 4K panel (around 138 PPI). A super sharp 4K-like image on an ultrawide is going to look insane in real gameplay. The other massive upgrade is the tandem OLED panel. I’ve been using a true black glossy tandem OLED recently, and tandem is the real deal: more color, higher overall brightness, better peak highlights, and potentially longer lifespan. LG also backs off the curve to 1500R on the 39, which makes sense on a smaller screen even though I still think 800R is perfect on 45-inch. And finally: full UBR20 DisplayPort at 80Gbps—huge win for future-proofing and potentially avoiding DSC. My one frustration is refresh rate staying at 165Hz; I wanted 200–240Hz badly. Still, LG is pushing ultrawide harder than anyone right now, and CES should tell us how all of this looks in practice.
