About This Video

In this video I break down a question we get all the time at the shop: what weight denominations should you buy if you want the most versatility as a diver? I’m not calculating your exact weighting needs here (I’ve got a separate video for that), but I am showing you the “rule of thumb” combo that’s worked for me and for the majority of the divers we train—especially if you bounce between freshwater and saltwater, or you change exposure protection through the year. My go-to setup is simple: two 2’s, two 3’s, and two 4’s. That gives you a ton of options without overbuying a pile of random weights. With that combo you can run 4 lbs (two 2’s), 6 lbs (two 3’s), and 8 lbs (two 4’s), and you can mix them to hit 10 lbs (2+3 and 2+3), 12 lbs (4+2 and 4+2), and 14 lbs (3+4 and 3+4). I also talk about not being overweighted—your goal is never “more lead,” it’s the right lead—so log your weighting and build your kit around the environments you actually dive.
