About This Video

In this video I’m back at home (yep—flu hit the whole house), but that gave me the perfect excuse to knock out a quick gear upgrade: replacing and rethreading cam straps on my BCD/backplate-and-wing setup. I walk you through how I like to orient everything (I’m right-handed, so I keep my buckles on the right side so I can cam down toward me), how to feed the strap through the cam slots, and why I leave about 2–3 inches from the bladder before the buckle/D-ring. On this particular wing there’s a lot of open space, so I don’t want the buckle getting pulled through where it doesn’t belong. Then I show you my favorite way to remember how to thread the cam buckle: a simple number system—1324. I label the D-ring as “1,” then the next slots up as 2, 3, and 4. Run the odds first (1 then 3), cam the buckle back to expose slot 2, then finish with 2 and 4. I also repeat the process for the lower strap while adding nonditchable trim weight pockets, and I explain how to keep everything neat so excess webbing doesn’t ride up over the wing. Last tip: if your cam straps are brand new, get them wet first, cinch them down on a tank, and let them dry. They’ll stretch and set to the perfect length so you’re not fighting them on dive day.
