About This Video

In this video I show you just how easy it is to swap the wing on a single tank backplate-and-wing setup. I’m stuck at home for a couple days (the flu is making its rounds in my house) so I used the time to do a little gear tinkering—specifically swapping my 22 lb Mares XR wing over to a Dive Rite travel wing with 25 lb of lift. I walk through stripping the rig down, pulling accessories, removing the cam straps, and then backing out the flathead bolt/nut sets that hold the wing to the plate (and in my case also help pin part of the harness in place). I also point out the big differences between these two wings: the Mares has built-in tank stabilizers and dual bottom dumps (and I personally prefer my pull dump on the right), while the Dive Rite wing is simpler and may need a single tank adapter depending on how it sits on the tank. I show how I line up bolt holes (my plate has four, the Dive Rite wing only has two), hand-start the threads to avoid cross-threading, and then give it “a little love” with two flatheads—no need to go crazy. The takeaway: BP/W systems are modular, you can mix brands, and this is absolutely something most divers can do at home if you take your time and double-check alignment.
