What’s up, guys—Brian again from Lake Hickory Scuba. In this one I’m taking you back down to Cozumel for part four of our series where I try to get you to pick out specific underwater ecology during the dive. We’re diving the Delilah Reef System, which is named for the adjacent shoreline (Delilah Ranch) right up against the reef. It’s a great little shallow dive that works for brand new divers and advanced divers alike, because you’ve got plenty of overhangs and even some swimthroughs to explore. During the dive, I challenge you to spot three species: the Great Barracuda, the Sergeant Major, and the Yellowtail Damselfish. My biggest takeaway here is to slow down and really look—especially up underneath those crevices and overhangs—because that’s where you’ll see a lot of the life tucked in. If you want to go deeper than just “seeing fish,” I also recommend checking out the SSI ecology programs to build a better understanding of what you’re looking at and why it’s there.
