About This Video

What’s up, guys—Brian here from Lake Hickory Scuba. In this video I’m down in beautiful Cozumel, Mexico, and I wanted to show you a simple but really important piece of emergency prep that can help aircraft find a vessel if something goes wrong offshore. Most of you already know I love our Lake Hickory Scuba signal mirror, because you can use that center sight hole to actually pinpoint an airplane and flash a signal if you’re ever stranded. But what a lot of divers don’t realize is that many boats also carry a similar concept—just built into the vessel. I show you a small spinning reflector device mounted on the boat that reflects sunlight as the sun moves. If the boat breaks down and you’re drifting, that reflected light can be spotted by aircraft, basically the same idea as a signal mirror but working passively from the vessel. The big takeaway: radios and communications are great (and this boat has them), but having a visual signaling option is a solid backup. And if ocean anxiety is a thing for you, tools like this—plus the fact that in Cozumel you’re often not far offshore—can really help ease your mind.
