In this part of my 2026 Rig Run Down series, I’m laying out the three sets of fins I actually use year-round—and yeah, they’re dirty. If you’re wondering why they’re faded or still have mud on them, it’s simple: I dive seven days a week, and my gear gets used and abused. I’m not trying to keep fins looking pristine for a shelf; I’m trying to make them work dive after dive. First up are my Mares Razor Apneas for freediving. I don’t get as many sessions in as I used to, but I still train and get out 30–50 times a year. Next are my Mares Avanti Quattros—my babies—and the fin I’d put up against anything on the market. I’m running spring straps on them, they’ve been “doctored up,” and I still think they’re probably the greatest set of dive fins ever made: great fit, phenomenal performance, and an all-around universal fin. Last are my Mares Power Planas, which are my go-to work fins for public safety, salvage, and commercial jobs when I need extremely heavy feet and want to stay pinned to the bottom. I also explain why I swapped strap/buckle setups on the Power Planas to avoid damaging the posts in a working environment.
