About This Video

In this video I’m walking you through my 2026 rig rundown—specifically all the BCDs I’ll be diving this year. I’ve got a whole rack of gear in the shop, but I’m only focusing on the systems I’m actually using: my simple teaching backplate/wing, my public safety/salvage rig, my sidemount setups, and my doubles wing. I explain what each one is for, why it’s set up the way it is, and what I like (and don’t like) about certain designs when you’re in real-world diving situations. For teaching, I keep it “no frills, no thrills”: a basic soft-plate backplate/wing with a 22 lb bladder that’s comfortable and easy for single-tank work. My public safety rig is similar but built for the job—steel plate for extra weight, a soft back pad to keep that plate from freezing me out (and to help protect a shell drysuit when I’m gearing up fast), a deluxe harness with quick breakaways, and a 34 lb wing. On the sidemount side, I run a lightweight Marz XR Pure system for travel/“monkey diving,” and a Dive Rite Nomad Ray for heavier technical dives—easy to adjust, tough materials, and I’ve taken it deep with multiple bottles. I also cover my doubles setup with an aluminum plate, a 44 lb wing, and the exact weighting that works for my cold-water, double AL80 diving. Finally, I show two vintage “specialty” BCDs I’ll be testing in 2026 to see if the old-school designs still hold up.
