In this video, I’m basically giving you a real-life tour of how we’re making gardening actually doable from a wheelchair (and easier on my back too). We’re out in our yard showing the raised accessible beds Derek built—using old electric crossarms (yep, the ones that literally say “high voltage”). The whole point is keeping things up where I can reach them, water them, and work them without having to fight the ground. We even throw up a sun shade because, as Derek says, he’s a “delicate little flower” who doesn’t do direct summer heat. We walk through what we’re growing and why: a “salsa planter” loaded with onions, peppers (peppercinis, jalapeños, serranos), tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, plus root veggies like turnips and beets. We’ve also got rosemary right by the grill (because priorities), grapes everywhere, and fruit trees like lemon, apple, plum, nectarine, and apricot—plus plans to espalier branches when they’re getting too loaded. On the other bed, it’s salad city: lots of lettuce (romaine too), zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, spinach from seed, and strawberries—protected because Sage will absolutely harvest snacks herself. The big takeaway: if you’ve got health concerns or disabilities, build the garden to meet you where you’re at—accessible doesn’t mean boring; it means you get to grow your own wins.
