In this video, we’re sharing one of the hardest parts of life with a service dog: realizing the time you get is never enough. Derec’s service dog, Gunner, has been by his side for what feels like forever—even though it’s been “only” about 10 years. Gunner wasn’t just a pet in our house. He was line-of-sight loyal, emotionally grounding, and tuned in to Derec’s wheelchair life in a way that still blows my mind—alerting to certain sounds, checking on him, and even going to get help when Derec ends up on the floor from spasms. We also tell the real beginning of Gunner’s story—how he showed up scraggly, emaciated, and terrified, and how we tried everything to find an owner with zero responses. Over time, he became the most social, friendly dog… protective without being aggressive. A military buddy helped us recognize Gunner’s personality as a perfect candidate, and from there, Gunner stepped into a role that was part training and part pure instinct. This is our sendoff—memory lane, tears, and gratitude. We started our channel with a wheelchair and two dogs, and now neither are with us. The takeaway is simple and heavy: our pets are only here a short time, but their impact is huge—and Gunner’s legacy is bigger than loyalty. He changed how we cope, how we live, and how we keep rolling forward.
