About This Video

Ladies and gentlemen, this one was an emergency broadcast: it’s going to snow in like three days, so we yanked an abandoned 1979 Yamaha Exciter out of the farthest corner of the barn and went full “get it on the snow” mode. The goal was simple—drag home forgotten iron, get it running again, and see if it’ll survive the drive… except this time it’s a sled, and the “drive” is whether it’ll live through a real ride. We strip the Exciter down fast (because Yamahas are fantastically easy), find the usual surprises hiding under the engine and seat (mouse nest tinderball included), and clean everything so it doesn’t turn into a bonfire the first time it gets a spark. From there, I go through the stuff that actually matters if you want these old sleds to be reliable: replacing rotten fuel lines, watching oil injection settings (more oil isn’t automatically “healthier”), and checking clutch spacing washers so you don’t misalign the drivetrain. We rebuild the skid with fresh bearings, talk hifax wear, preload blocks, and how the limiting strap affects ski pressure versus straight-line speed. Then I show my preferred Exciter handlebar mod for a better riding position, plus we get into the Phazer skid swap/Exciter suspension upgrade how-to for anyone who wants to make one of these old Yamahas ride better than factory.
