About This Video

Told you I’d find a truck to drive to Minnesota… and I showed up with half a truck. In this one we’re out in northeastern Iowa in 8° weather, and we buy a ’77 Ranchero GT sight unseen with the brilliant plan of reviving it on the spot, hooking a trailer full of vintage sleds behind it, and driving 400+ winter miles to the Midwest Ride-In. The tires were bald, the carb was acting like a fuel bomb, and the “minor details” pile was growing fast—so naturally we dove in. We fight the 302 to life with whatever flammable stuff we can find, realize it basically “ain’t got no gas in it,” then start chasing the real gremlins: a Holley 2-barrel economizer carb that likes to flood and puke fuel out the vent. I tear it down in a warm shop, throw gaskets at it, swap in a new needle and seat, and do the bare-minimum tuning to get it highway-happy. Phoenix handles tire duty and we slap on some General Grabbers because if you’ve got a Ranchero, you do it right. Then we hit the road—60 mph at about 2400 rpm, towing two sleds like it doesn’t care—until the next problem shows up: the fuel filler neck/grommet situation leaking once we get around 10 gallons in it. The big takeaway? Old full-frame “car-trucks” are awesome haulers, but you’d better be ready to fix dumb stuff in parking lots if you want the adventure.
