About This Video

Spring showed up (sort of), so I dragged that abandoned ’93 Jeep Wrangler back out of my shed and decided it was finally time to put it back on the road for good… or evil. Angus and I took it for a sketchy little shakedown run—brake light on, pedal feels like we’ve got half the brakes, it stinks like fuel, and the motor sounds like it’s running on about 3 of its 12 cylinders. After a long-overdue wash, we got it in the shop and started figuring out what was actually wrong instead of just guessing. Compression numbers told the story (110 psi on #4), and the borescope confirmed it: that piston is missing part of itself and the cylinder wall is chewed up. We yanked the 2.5L, tore it down, and yep—melted piston crown like a two-stroke, seized ring, and a ridge you can feel with your whole finger. We tried the “just throw a 4.0 in it” idea, but Jeep being Jeep, the AX5/AX15 mess means that swap turns into an entire driveline/ECM/mounts ordeal. So the plan is machine shop time for the 2.5, while we pivot hard into making the chassis safe: new brake lines, rear drum brake work, master cylinder concerns, shocks, and even flushing literal pounds of junk out of the boxed frame rails.
