CES 2026 in Las Vegas was crazy, and one of the biggest behind-the-scenes takeaways for me wasn’t a shiny new gadget—it was a reality check on connectivity. I’ve been working with a bunch of creators (from smaller channels like mine to some of the biggest names), and what I love is how the community bands together when a company decision hurts real smart home users. This time, that issue is MyQ. In my opinion, they still don’t have the connectivity we all deserve for products we buy with our hard-earned cash. In the video I talk about how MyQ has shut down APIs, alienated a lot of the enthusiast community, and keeps moving toward a walled garden approach that just doesn’t work. There are also rumblings about security changes that could block even more integrations—including tools like RATGDO (Rage Against the Garage Door Opener) that many people rely on to connect current MyQ garage door openers into platforms like Home Assistant. The good news: about 15 of us creators attended an event with MyQ and directly voiced these concerns to leadership and tech folks. I’m all for protecting user data, but I’m pushing for an “expert/geek mode” so advanced users can integrate responsibly—because automations like unlocking doors during a smoke alarm aren’t just convenience features, they can save lives.
