About This Video

In this video I set up the Meross MS605 battery powered smart presence sensor, and the whole reason I’m excited about it is simple: I wanted presence sensing in a room without running an ugly wire. The MS605 is Matter over Thread, so you’re not locked into the Meross app long-term—but I start in the Meross app anyway because it makes dialing in range and sensitivity really easy. I use that to map out my home theater so I can tell when I’m specifically in the “back row” area versus further forward. Once the zones are set (I land around 3.2 meters for my back-row cutoff), I bring it into Google Home first, then use “Link Matter apps and services” to grab a pairing code. From there I add it into Home Assistant using the Matter integration (yes, even though it’s already in Google Home). After it shows up, I build a couple simple Home Assistant automations: when the back area becomes occupied, I set my back lights to 1%, and when presence is no longer detected, I turn those lights off. The end result is a theater that behaves the way we actually use it—low-level lighting when someone’s back there, and no wasted light when the area is empty.
