About This Video

In this simple watercolour fox tutorial, I’m painting a soft, fluffy-looking fox using a wet-in-wet approach. The goal here is to keep things loose and forgiving—letting the water do a lot of the blending work so you get that gentle transition in the fur without having to overwork it. I start from a reference photo (credited below) to get the initial drawing in place, and then I build the painting in a straightforward way that you can try right away. I also share the exact kinds of supplies I use regularly—my palette setup, the paper I trust when I want predictable washes, and the brushes that make wet-in-wet a lot easier. If you’re new to painting animals, this is a great exercise in controlling water, timing your edges, and simplifying details so the fox still reads clearly without getting overly tight. If you want a soft effect, this is one of my favourite ways to get it: keep the washes clean, let them settle, and only sharpen a few key areas at the end.
