This is the first of four sheets Daniel Smith has for testing out their watercolours. I decided to break the process into individual videos to cut down on the length, so this is the first instalment (Yellows, Reds and Purples) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshwileypaintings/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joshwileypaintings

About This Video

In this video I’m trying out the first of Daniel Smith’s watercolor test sheets, and I’m focusing on the yellows, reds, and purples. The whole point here is to get the paints out of the tube and onto paper in a consistent way so I can actually see what they look like—especially in washes—rather than guessing from a dot card or a photo online. I’m treating it like a practical colour check: what’s bright, what’s muted, what feels transparent, and what I’d realistically reach for in a painting. I also decided to split the full set of test sheets into individual videos because doing all four in one go would be way too long. So this is part one, and it’s basically my first pass at getting a feel for these warm and cool families before moving on to the other sheets. If you’re building a palette, thinking about swapping pigments, or you just like seeing real paint tests before buying, this is a simple way to compare colours side-by-side and start narrowing down what you actually want to use.
