I forgot to mention this in the video but this was a picture I took during our travels in the states (a drive by snapshot from a car). I was very glad to paint something I took myself because I don't often have the reference photos myself. 0:00 Intro 1:53 Drawing 8:24 First Wash 21:00 Second Wash 36:42 Details 50:35 Wrap Up

About This Video

In this full process watercolour tutorial, I paint a rural barn scene from start to finish—starting with the sketch and working all the way through to the final washes and details. I break the painting into clear stages so you can follow along: drawing (to lock in the big shapes and perspective), a first wash to establish the main light and colour relationships, a second wash to deepen values and build structure, and then the detail pass where everything gets sharpened up and brought to life. One thing I really enjoyed about this one is that the reference photo was my own—a quick drive-by snapshot I took while travelling in the States. I don’t often get to paint from my own photos, so it was a nice change, and it made me think more intentionally about simplifying what I saw and choosing what to emphasise. If you’re trying to get better at full scenes, this video is all about taking it step-by-step: keep the early washes simple, save the darkest darks for later, and use the final details to guide the viewer’s eye rather than outlining everything.
