About This Video

In this video I paint a simple rural scene with a few cows, keeping the whole thing approachable and loose. I’m working from a reference photo (linked below), but I’m not trying to copy every detail—this is more about getting the feel of the landscape and the shapes of the cows with just a handful of clear, confident washes. If you’re newer to watercolour, this is a great kind of subject because you can simplify almost everything into big value shapes and let the paint do the work. I stick to a limited palette: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Sap Green, Payne’s Gray, Hansa Yellow Medium, and Raw Umber. With those, you can mix natural-looking greens and earthy neutrals, push your darks when you need to, and keep the scene cohesive. The main takeaway is to start simple, establish the big shapes first, and only add a few darker accents to suggest cows, shadows, and distance—without overworking it.
