About This Video

In this video I revamp my old travel palette and rebuild it into a limited palette setup that’s actually practical for painting on the go. I start by taking the old palette apart, cleaning things up, and deciding what’s staying and what’s getting replaced. From there I plan out my colour layout and talk through why I’m choosing certain colours (as of Feb. 2022), with the goal of keeping it simple but still flexible enough to mix what I need. Once the plan is set, I switch over to mostly full pans and fill everything in, then put the palette back together and swatch the whole set. Swatching is the part that really tells the truth—how the colours look in mass tone, how they dilute, and how they’ll behave next to each other when I’m mixing. If you’re trying to build a travel kit without hauling your whole studio around, this is basically my full process for getting a compact palette that’s easy to use, easy to refill, and consistent every time you open it up (plus a bit of bonus material at the end).
