In this video I paint a city scene from Venezuela using (almost) only one brush: a 1/2" flat brush. The whole point is to show how far you can push a flat—blocking in big shapes, carving out buildings, and getting those crisp edges that make an urban scene read quickly. I keep it focused on practical moves you can copy right away, even if you’re newer to watercolor. I lean on the flat for washes, value changes, and simple shape design, because a flat brush makes you commit to confident strokes instead of noodling with tiny marks. You’ll see how I use the brush orientation (wide vs. narrow edge) to switch between broad coverage and tighter lines, and how I simplify details so the painting stays clean and readable. If you’ve ever wondered whether you really “need” a bunch of brushes to paint a full scene, this is my proof that you can do a lot with one solid flat and a clear plan.
