About This Video

In this video I walk you through a simple rural Mongolian landscape using a photo reference by Dimitri Mundorff. I keep it approachable and focused on the big shapes first—sky, distant land, and the main foreground—so you can get a strong read of the scene without overthinking details. This one is all about calm, natural colour and letting the watercolour do what it does best: soft transitions, lost edges, and a bit of texture where it counts. Palette-wise I’m working with Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green, Hansa Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Payne’s Gray, Carmine, White, and Burnt Sienna. I mix warm earths for the ground and structures, then balance them with cooler blues and greens so the landscape doesn’t go flat. The main takeaway is to simplify: group values, keep your washes clean, and add contrast near your focal area at the end. If you’re looking for a relaxed narrated landscape you can paint along with, this is a great one to try right away.
