About This Video

In this full tutorial I paint a Moana-inspired sailboat scene that’s simple to follow but still has a lot of satisfying watercolour “magic” in it—waves, reflections, and a bright sun that I keep clean using masking tape. I work through the painting from start to finish, focusing on how to build the ocean in layers so it feels like moving water instead of a flat blue wash. The goal is to keep it approachable: big shapes first, then a few well-placed darker strokes to sell the wave rhythm. I also spend time on reflections, because that’s where a lot of these boat scenes either work or fall apart. I keep the reflection shapes tied to the boat and the light source, and I let the water do some of the blending so it stays soft and believable. If you’re newer to watercolours, this is a great one to practice clean edges (with tape), controlled wet-on-wet for the water, and a simple, readable silhouette for the sailboat. I used two free reference photos (linked) to help with the boat and the overall vibe.
