There are prizes! ⚝ I took part in @TomKatStitchery 's Precious Fabric Challenge for 2025 and chose one of the most expensive (and most difficult!) fabrics I’ve ever sewn with. My original sewing plan was to make a jacket, but after lots of struggles, plan changes, and fabric frustrations, I ended up with a top instead. In this video, I share my sewing lessons learned: ✂️ How I managed a very tricky fabric ✂️ Why my sewing project didn’t go as planned ✂️ Thoughts about not acquiring expensive or inexpensive fabric that won't be worn 👉 Are you planning to enter the challenge? Do you have plans or dreams for a piece of precious fabric? Have you worked with a fabric that fought you every step of the way? Share your story in the comments — I’d love to hear it! About This Video

In this Precious Fabric Challenge video, I take you along for a very real-life sewing-over-50 experience: big plans, a tricky fabric, and the kind of pivot you only make after you’ve wrestled with a project long enough to know it’s not going to behave. I’m joining @TomKatStitchery’s #preciousfabric25 challenge and I chose one of the most expensive (and most difficult) fabrics I’ve ever sewn—an iridescent pink stretch faux leather. My original plan was a jacket, but between the fabric’s personality and my patience level, I ended up changing course and making a top instead. I walk through my pattern ideas (Butterick 7008, McCalls 8607, and Vogue 1833), what I was aiming for, and what actually happened once I got to the sewing. The collar was the moment where everything went a bit “UGH,” and I talk honestly about what that taught me—especially about choosing designs that suit the fabric, managing expectations, and not letting “precious” fabric sit unused because I’m afraid to mess it up. The big takeaway: whether fabric is expensive or inexpensive, if it’s not going to be worn, I need to rethink the plan and make something that will actually earn a place in my wardrobe.
