We’re back in southern Utah, just outside Zion National Park—one of our favorite places on Earth—and we’re finally sharing a few ways to experience Zion without getting swallowed by the crowds. We start the day the way I think Zion is best experienced: by bicycle. We use the free shuttle to get up-canyon, drop the bikes, and then just cruise—stopping wherever we want, soaking in that soft morning/late-day light, and riding right past the chaos near Angels Landing. From there we do what we love most: go beyond the map. We hike on slickrock slabs to find a quieter drainage, pass ancient rock art (look with your eyes, keep your hands in your pockets), and then shift into full technical mode for a real slot canyon day—helmets, harnesses, ropes, and cold water. This one was especially meaningful because it’s Kathy’s true comeback adventure after a major ankle injury and surgery. We break down the gear we use (including a dry suit and waterproof bag for camera gear), run multiple rappels into pools, and finish with that “mission accomplished” feeling. And because we’re us, we bookend it with the essentials: an Oscar’s Cafe chicken burrito in Springdale, dispersed camping on the east side, and a home-cooked, all-electric van dinner from a Zion overlook that’s about as spectacular as it gets.
