We rolled out of Escalante thinking we were in for a classic Utah desert scenic drive—coffee for Kathy, a quick water fill at the Escalante Visitor Center, and then over to Boulder via Hell’s Backbone Road. I show exactly how I top off our Winnebago Revel’s tank when you’re not allowed to hook up a hose: a short cut hose, a beat-up Aqua-Tainer, and the van’s pump. It’s awkward and heavy (seven gallons is no joke), but it works anywhere—visitor centers, jugs in Mexico, even if you had to pull from a lake. From there, the day turns into a total curveball. We detour to Posey Lake—suddenly we’re in aspens and pines with snow falling—and then keep climbing toward the Hell’s Backbone Bridge. We camp right on the canyon edge for the photos, and overnight it actually happens: “when hell freezes over.” We wake up to 5–6 inches of snow, a Starlink buried under it, and a road that turns into a slick mix of snow and that slimy clay mud that feels like Vaseline. The big takeaway: spring in Utah can turn winter fast, and 4x4 doesn’t save you on the way down—traction and patience do. We creep the switchbacks in low gear, wait for a little sun, and make it safely into Boulder with a whole new respect for how quickly conditions change up high.
