On the Magruder Corridor in Idaho, I’m staring down about 100 miles of dirt, and while I don’t feel like I absolutely have to air down, I know it’s going to make the day better. Letting a little pressure out of my BFG KO3s helps the ride quality a ton—less bouncing, less harshness over washboard, and it helps the suspension not work so hard. The big takeaway is there’s no magic number that’s “right” for every road. I pick a pressure based on conditions, and for this stretch—more high-speed dirt and washboard—I go with my normal off-road touring baseline: 30 PSI up front and 40 PSI in the rear. I also show my simple process using Apex Rapid Dump valve stems. Mine have been all over North and South America and they’re a bit gummed up, so instead of wrestling with the tiny handle, I just use pliers to pull it—way easier. These stems dump air fast, so the first few times you’ll want to get a feel for how quickly you can drop 10–20 PSI in just a few seconds. Once I’m at 30F/40R, I snug the locking valve caps back on (they keep the stem from opening) and we keep rolling.
