About This Video

In this van mod video, we’re walking you through one of those upgrades that doesn’t look flashy on camera—but changes day-to-day life in a big way: our rear bug screen setup behind the back doors, right in front of the bed. When I unzip it, you can see the bed tucked right behind, but most of the time we actually leave the blackout blind zipped up. It ends up acting like a wall back there, and that’s exactly why we like it. The number one reason we set it to drop down to the bottom of the bed is weather protection. On a Sprinter-style rear door, the moment you open up in rain or snow, you’re exposed—so this waterproof screen material catches the splash and keeps it from ending up in our bedding. It’s also a legit thermal barrier: it helps block the heat you feel radiating through sun-baked rear doors, and it adds another layer for keeping things darker and cooler. We also run Canyon Adventure Vans magnetic window covers with insulation—heavy-duty, black, and perfect for sun control. And for a tiny but meaningful improvement, I added a little rope to the zipper pulls so I can reach them when they’re up high—plus a quick tip on zipper wax/lube after we had some zipper trouble down in South America.
