In our quest to go everywhere... We had to find the Galactic Belly Button (AKA- Cosmic Ashtray, The Volcano or Cosmic Navel, Islomania Dome, Red Breaks Crater, Inselberg Cyclonic Sand Pit). Whatever you call it, it's a sight to see. This massive crater sits in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It involves a miles-long 4x4 road through deep sand and a miles-long hike without any marker or trail to follow to access from the south side. Our Winnebago Revel made the trek easily in 4wd with the tires aired down to 30psi to give added float in the soft sand. This allowed us to reach the southern trailhead in our 4x4 Sprinter van. There is a northern route. It has a much better road but an 8-mile unmarked slick rock hike to find the Belly Button. Both ways have their unique challenges. We used GPS to find our way across the sea of slick rock domes and deep sand gullies. This is a really special place, and please respect it by packing out your trash, poop and leaving it natural and pristine.
