If you own a GMC Sierra AT4 or Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss, you may already know that leveling kits can change the geometry of your front suspension. One of the most common wear items affected by this is the front CV axle. In this video, I replace the front CV axle on my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 and walk through the installation process step by step. I also explain why lifted and leveled trucks often experience increased CV axle angles, which can accelerate wear on factory components. Instead of replacing the axle with another OEM unit, I decided to try an aftermarket upgraded option from TrakMotive — the GM-8545XTT extended travel CV axle. These axles are designed specifically for leveled or lifted trucks, offering increased articulation and improved durability compared to standard replacement parts. THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED VIDEO - I AM TESTING AN OE ALTERNATIVE BY CHOICE During the install I also take some time to explain: • Why leveling kits increase CV joint angles • Why some suspension manufacturers advise against using Auto 4-Hi after installing certain lift kits • The key differences between OEM and extended travel CV axles If you’re maintaining your own truck or considering suspension upgrades, this video will help you better understand how leveling kits affect front driveline components and what your replacement options are. About This Video

Not every video starts as a good news story, and this one definitely didn’t. Two years ago I installed a 1.75" ReadyLIFT leveling kit on my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 to get a little more clearance for bigger wheels up front. The reality with these 2" pre-lifted GM trucks (2019-2026 Silverado/Sierra) is they’re finicky when you change front suspension geometry, and CV axle angle is one of the first things that gets stressed. I noticed grease seepage and splatter on the passenger-side CV near the transfer case—no vibration, no obvious failure—so I’m calling it early before it turns catastrophic. In the video I walk through a full front CV axle replacement step-by-step on these 1500 trucks: moving wiring brackets and sensors (take a picture of clip orientation… ask me how I learned that), separating the tie rod, popping the upper ball joint, pulling the axle, and yes—ending up removing the brake caliper for the room we thought we wouldn’t need. Instead of going back OEM, I tested an OE alternative by choice: TrakMotive extended travel CV axles (GM-8545XTT), designed to articulate more and handle leveled/lifted angles. After install, I ran it at highway speed and in Auto 4WD—so far so good—but I’m watching full-droop clearance near the shock because those boots can get real close.
