One of the best ways to understand what’s actually happening inside an engine is through oil analysis. In this video I send a sample of oil from my 2021 GMC Sierra 6.2L to a professional laboratory to see what metals and contaminants are present after 5,000 km of use. The lab report measures elements like iron, aluminum, copper, and silicon in parts per million, which can reveal signs of internal engine wear from components like pistons, rings, bearings, and cylinder walls. In this video we walk through the entire oil analysis report step-by-step so you can understand what each metal means and whether the results are normal or concerning. If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually happening inside your engine — this is one of the best ways to find out. Topics Covered (I am NOT an Oil Analysis Expert) These are my opinions • What wear metals mean in an oil analysis • Iron, aluminum, copper and piston ring wear • Contamination indicators like silicon and sodium • Oil additive metals like zinc and molybdenum • How to interpret oil analysis results • What a “good” oil report looks like If you enjoy deep dives like this, consider subscribing to Donslife where I cover truck ownership, modifications, diagnostics and real-world testing. About This Video

In this video I wanted to answer a question a lot of you have been asking me while I’ve been covering the 6.2L L87 recall stuff: is my engine wearing itself out? My 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 isn’t part of the active recall, and it’s lived its whole life on 0W20 Dexos1 Gen 3 (the thin-as-water stuff). I pulled a warm oil sample after about 5,000 km on the oil, sent it to a lab (Boss Lubricants), and then I walk you through the report step-by-step so you can actually understand what the numbers mean. We start with the “oil killers” first—coolant/glycol, fuel dilution, and water—because if those are off, you’ve got bigger problems. My report came back clean there, and the viscosity stayed in grade for 0W20, which is a good baseline. Then we get into wear metals like iron, aluminum, copper, chromium, tin, and lead. My iron was slightly elevated (60 ppm), but the lab rated my wear as low, and everything else looked normal to very good. I also cover contamination indicators like silicon and sodium, plus additive metals like zinc, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and moly. The takeaway: no major red flags, but I’m watching iron and silicon for trends. Next up, I’m testing 0W40 (Mobil 1 FS Dexos R) and comparing it to what’s going on in Mrs. Donslife’s Escalade so we can make smarter oil decisions with real data.
